You don't want to confuse Lyle's Golden Syrup with Lyle's Treacle. Lyle's Golden Syrup is just that - a sugar syrup, sweet and golden. Tate & Lyle's Treacle is the by-product of sugar refining; treacle is called molasses here in the USA, and is a rich dark brown with a full-bodied, slightly minerall-y taste. On the same vein, blackstrap molasses is the very black end-product of sugar refining.
